📆 Reflecting on Sustainable Ferriby 2025: A community event for change

Yesterday’s Sustainable Ferriby 2025 event lived up to expectations, bringing together local residents, sustainability advocates, and even visitors from as far as Northumberland. The turnout was fantastic, and the discussions were insightful, reinforcing the importance of community-driven sustainability efforts.

The core theme of the event was around optimism for sustainability, with celebration of how far the industry, politics and adoption have come since the darker days of 2024. There was a review of successes, progress towards targets and new or better technologies to help. This positivity extended to encouraging people to instigate their own projects, supported by grants, financial incentives and a positive investment profile for funding.

There were engaging, even intimate, conversations about gradually embracing solar and battery power and the huge domestic and environmental impacts of well configured heat pump systems.

We were introduced to the wider context, with regional and national strategies and support, plus short case studies of Community Energy schemes across England.

There was active excitement about the founding of Sustainable Ferriby CIC, with several community projects already progressing and discussion of the bigger future picture.

A fun and insightful quiz was available to try online. It’s still available here:

We couldn’t have done it without… everyone

The event featured presentations from Harry, Duncan, Dave, and James, introduced and compered by Simon Hudson, all of whom generously shared their expertise on topics ranging from energy reduction and heat pumps to EV adoption and the exciting community energy programme launching in the West Hull Villages. Their contributions made the event a true success, sparking meaningful conversations and inspiring action.

A huge thank you goes out to Ferriby Social Club, which kindly provided the venue, and to our dedicated volunteers—Lee-Ann, Christine, and Fergus—who helped ensure everything ran smoothly. Their efforts made the event not just informative but also welcoming and engaging.

It was good of Sir David Davis MP to pop in and show his support.

The engagement of the attendees was amazing. Great questions, observations and shared insights all round.

Looking Ahead

The organisers and Sustainable Ferriby CIC are keen to hear from attendees and the wider community. To this end there is a short survey which people are encouraged to complete:

For those who couldn’t attend, the event slides are attached in PDF format at the end of this post. If anyone wants the original PowerPoint files please let Simon know.

To finish, enjoy some snapshots from the day, capturing the energy and enthusiasm of everyone involved.

With planning already underway for the next event, we’re excited to continue building momentum and expanding our reach. Sustainable Ferriby is more than just an event—it’s a movement, and we’re just getting started.

Stay tuned for updates, and let’s keep working together toward a greener future!
